A small bead of sweat ran down Luckys face, he worked the small tools inside of the lock. He had all the tumbler pins lined up with his rake and held in place with the tension tool, now all he should have to do is rotate the outer hasp.Hurry the blazes up! Patch hissed over his shoulder
Your welcome to try your luck any time with this nag Patch. Lucky whispered back. Otherwise shut your hole and let me work.
The big oaf of a man on Luckys right stated. I think them guards are working there way back this away. I sees there torches coming.
Lucky heard the lock open with a click Well then Shrunk I suggest we get our tails in here. He said as he swung the door open The other three thieves quickly entered the darkened gem shop; Lucky followed and quietly closed the door just as the guard rounded the corner.
The display cabinets were full of Diamonds, Rubies and Emeralds The thieves quickly all set to work. Glasscutters cut the tops and they scooped out their treasures and dropped them into dark padded bags. When the last of the gems had been picked clean Patch took charge.
Ok just like we said now. We all leave one at a timeDo a 50 count after each person leaves. We take separate routes and we meet up in the Sewer and no going anywhere else until we split up the loot.
Shrunk went first, followed by lefty and then PatchLucky left last and re-locked the door.
As Lucky cut back between side streets and alleys he worked his way to the sewer entrance. As he descended the ladder a bright light shown in his eyes
Damn it get that out of my face. Lucky snarled as he watched Lefty lower the bulls-eye lanternGeeze now Im half blind you know that light screws with my elf sight. Lucky said as he touched down on the bottom. His eyes had sparkles dancing before them but he could vaguely make out the others except for Patch.
Wheres Patch he should be here now. Lucky questioned.
Oh he was here. Shrunk replied he went to get a Gem eyeglass thingy so we can tell the good ones he told us to tell you to start dividing up the loot. We already got ours dumped out. Shrunk said pointing to a cloth on the slimy floor that was covered in gems.
Come on Luck, dump yours out lets see what we got. Lefty said motioning.
Lucky knelt on his knees and started to dump his pouch of gems out when he suddenly felt 4 sharp quick pains in his backWith a groan he crumpled to the floor onto his stomach. A quick kick to his side rolled him over and he could see Patch standing there clutching a dagger red with his own blood and green from whatever poison coated it.
You two get the gems and get to the warehouse. Patch growled. I will finish with him here.
Lucky groaned as he felt the poison course through his system and gagged as he coughed blood from his mouth. At least one of his lungs was punched in the attack he knew.
Luck luck luck not so lucky today are ya. Patch said with a sneer as he hovered above him.
Hanging with those elves taught ya all the wrong things. They taught ya how nice people are and worse yet to trustya forgot the code Lucky ya forgot the code. Patch said as he tossed his dagger from hand to hand.
And we saw what ya was up to ya idiot. Ya think the Archery shop is private. He snickered. Now, that we might have let go, but forgetting the code Luck that was just well deadly wasnt it now.
Lucky struggled to get to his knees, blood ran freely from his mouth and he choked on it.
Ohhh ya still wanna live do yaThats right those elves are big into the whole life thing aint they. Well ya know what those other boys are expecting me to slit yer throat Luck, but Im going to give ya chance for ohhh I say maybe 10 more minutes of life. Course you will suffer and towards the end you might actually beg me for death but right now Im feeling generous. So tell ya whatIf you can tell me the Code ya forgot. The Code of Thieves I wont kill ya right away. Patch said smiling.
Lucky struggled to speak The Code is he whispered as he hacked more blood.
Come on out with. Patch said as he bent down to put his ear close to Luckys mouth to hear.
There is no honor among thieves. Lucky said as he rammed his own dagger up under Patchs chin and into his throat.
Patch stumbled backwards gagging and then crumpled in a heap as his lifeblood squirted out in streams in sync with his heartbeat.
Lucky crawled to the ladder, if he could get to a healer or even to Hannas he might stand a chance. He could feel the poison cloud his vision and his loss of blood was making him dizzy. Pulling him self up slowly one rung at a time he made it half way then he looked down and could see the rats swarming on Patchs dead body, then the world turned black and he fell back to the slimly floor with a thud.
