Queenie had as juicy an ear of corn is they had at this time of year in her hand. Slowly she followed the silly cow trying to tease young Bess to come to her. Bess wasn’t used to her yet and just wasn’t sure she was going to trust her. Queenie stopped for a minute to push a lock of her dark strawberry blond hair out of her eyes. She was a patient woman, after all being a mother had taught her patience, but it was close to time to milk this cow and get started on her morning chores. There wasn’t time for this so it was tempting to let the cow go and get her later. But she knew the damage that could cause if she got over full from not being milked soon enough. Several minutes later the young Bess gave into the temptation of the corn and was caught. Gently Queenie slipped the soft rope over her neck and started to lead her to the barn. As she started to crest the slight rise that approached the barn, she thought she heard a soft “ psst Ma ”. Looking around she saw Nicola hiding behind a stand of willows and started towards her. With a shake of her head and a finger to her lips, Nicola quickly filled her in on what she had seen at the house. Queenie felt a cold fear settle over her like a cloak left out in the winter. Her parents had filled her head with stories of the dark elves and all the depravities they were capable of. The two females slowly and quietly backed down the rise and found a place to tether the cow and wait for the evil that was in the house leave so they could figure out what to do.
