The Rescue of Culindar: The Adventure by Tizer (24 Sep, 1996)
On the eve of Yavannie 24, the Elves of Tel'Mithrim ventured to the deep caves under the town of Westbridge. Culindar, a veteran member of Tel'Mithrim had been captured by the Drow and taken down below the earth. Nedylene and Arielana, two Priestesses of Lloth, had planned to sacrifice Culindar to the Spider Queen. Starrbolt, Culindar's apprentice in the guild, departed from the guild hall at dawn with hopes to catch the Drow en route to the caverns. He did indeed and followed them to Triboar where he took a rest at the inn. There he met up with a friend from the Proectorate; Banester. Banester and Starrbolt decided to infiltrate the lair of the Dark Elves and find Culindar before they were discovered. However, this was not to be, for the two were found by a group of Drow in one of the many twisting passages of Westbridge Under. The two Elves fought bravely, but the Drow were too many. Banester severely injured one of the fiends, but in the process, he went down and did not rise. Without time to mourn the loss of Banester, Starrbolt fled into the shadows to wait for the arrival of the rescue party. Meanwhile, Tizer, Brisid, and Dinalqua of Tel'Mithrim were fighting their way through the woods outside Triboar. After slaying countless gryphons and margoyles, they reached the inn within the walls of the town. It was there that they found Melliandra, a member of the Knights of the Order. Melliandra agreed to help them on their quest and together, the group of five journeyed on towards Westbridge. After reaching Westbridge, the band entered the maze which led to the underground caverns. It was here that they entered a deadly battle. From out of the woods appeared several driders accompanied by some evil clerics and a mage. With fireball spells from Tizer and Brisid, all but one of the driders were dispatched easily. However, the mage held Melliandra in her path and she was struck down by the one remaining drider. Angered at the loss of her friend, Dinalqua uttered a few syllables and the mage was burnt to ash by the lightning that jumped from her fingers. With the loss of their fellows, the clerics turned to flee into the forest when Brisid caught them both from behind with an arrow in each of their backs. As they neared the caverns, Tizer was able to establish a mental link with Starrbolt. Starrbolt informed Tizer of his location and of the Drow that surrounded him. From his vantage point he could hear Culindar's cries of pain as Lloth's followers dug at his flesh with their pointed fingernails to taste his blood. Starrbolt knew that he could rescue Culindar if the patrolling Drow warriors were occupied. At last, Tizer, Dinalqua, and Brisid reached the entrance to the caverns beneath Westbridge. As they warily surveyed their surroundings, they could hear the harsh whispers of Drow scouts watching them and relating their every move to the others standing nearby. Dinalqua knew of a spot in the dark caves where they could regain some of their strength and memorize the appropriate spells to battle the Drow. She led them through the curving hallways to the place of rest. It was there that the group was quite surprised to find Thranduil Graywolf, Tel'Mithrim's 1st Lieutenant. He had no contact with Starrbolt or any member of the rescue party, but had seen the Drow slip into the dense growth of the maze in Westbridge. He followed them to their caverns and stumbled upon the place of safety. Now that the rescue party was in the caverns, Tizer had a very clear mental link with Starrbolt. After meeting up with Graywolf, the party agreed to seek out Starrbolt and mount an attack on the altar room where Culindar was being held captive. After preparing for a fight, the group of Elves descended ever-deeper into the dark pit. The twisting passageways did their best to confuse the group, but they did not lose sight of their goal. They continued towards the center of the caverns. As they walked carefully along the stone floor, the passage widened and Brisid heard a distant grinding sound that seemed to be coming closer. The sound did become louder and within a few seconds three Umber Hulks burst forth from the stone wall of the cavern. The four Elves drew their weapons and stood at the ready to deal with the foul beasts. However, it was now that the Drow planned their attack. A Dark Elf by the name of Urobos leapt from the shadows and shot a bolt of lightning at Dinalqua. Caught completely off guard, she endured the pain and prepared a spell. Unfortunately, the Umber Hulk knocked her on the floor with its enormous claw. The Drow smiled wickedly and let forth a burst of magical energy from his thin fingers. The force of the spell sent Dinalqua into oblivion. Brisid, Tizer, and Graywolf rallied to counter-attack. They each cast a protective Globe of magical defense to avoid succumbing to the same fate as Dinalqua. However, their lack of preparation time had not allowed them to duplicate themselves and thus they were easy targets for some spells cast by the Drow Cleric/Mages. Zacnefear chanted in a low voice in a prayer to Lloth. Within seconds, a pale blue mist left his hands and encircled Tizer's body. He could no longer move his body and was forced to stay still and watch his two kinsmen battle the Dark Elves. Unfortunately, Brisid and Graywolf were in similar condition not long after. Urobos then cast a dark purple cloud around the three Elves. The air was putrid, but they endured the noxious fumes and shouted taunts at the grinning Drow. With many of the Drow fighting with the group of surface Elves elsewhere in the caverns, Starrbolt made his way to Lloth's altar. He saw Culindar, tied down to the large stone block, with a giant spider not a foot over his bare chest. Starr acted quickly and slashed Culindar's bonds with his long sword. Then the pair krept into the shadows and started to make their way towards the cavern exit. While Starrbolt and Culindar were sneaking through the winding passages, Brisid, Graywolf, and Tizer were trapped in the poisonous cloud, gasping for breath. It was then that Katishya, a Drow priestess, entered the fight. She tried to lead the remaining Umber Hulk over to slay the helpless Graywolf, but was unsuccessful. The beast would not follow her requests and so she became caught between it and Graywolf, acting as a shield. Soon after her entrance, the globes of protection around each of the three surface Elves faded away. They were immediately bombarded with lightning bolts and balls of magical energy. They all knew that they had to keep the Dark Elves occupied long enough for Culindar to escape. Tizer had lost telepathic contact with Starrbolt because of his extreme condition. All they could do was wait and provoke the Drow to continue the endless torture. After several minutes of pain, Graywolf collapsed to the ground after a streak of lightning sent from the hand of Shadosin, a Drow wizard, sapped the last of his strength. Brisid and Tizer cried out in grief but could not move to help their comrade. Tizer could also feel his strength being drained both by the deadly cloud and the powerful magics of the Drow Cleric/Mages. When he started to feel faint, an insistent message from Starrbolt forced its way into his clouded mind. The message was very clear in its statement of "WE MADE IT!" Tizer's heart leapt at the thought of his toror' being brought to safety. As the dungeon faded from view, Tizer shouted "Celebrate the outcome of this single battle, Dark Ones, for we have achieved our goal! Descend back to the festering pit from whence you came!" His last sight was the look of utter shock on each of the Dark Elves' faces. When Tizer awoke, he was being gently shaken and he heard Culindar's voice. He had been brought to the Inn at Westbridge. After his departure from the waking world, the Drow whom he had been fighting rushed off to find Arielana and Nedylene to beg forgiveness. Though the ways of Lloth are not known in depth by the surface dwellers, she must have been most displeased by the escape of her sacrifice. When the Dark Elves had left the premises, Brisid was released from his stationary condition and examined his fallen fellows. As he was checking Graywolf for vital signs, Dinalqua shakily came up behind him and offered her assistance in moving the Elves. She had only been knocked unconscious by the force of the magic missile. Together, Brisid and Dinalqua brought Graywolf and Tizer to the Inn to recuperate. After awakening from his unconscious state, Tizer was overjoyed to see his mellonea standing over him waiting for him to awaken. The group, now including Culindar, Graywolf, Tizer, Dinalqua, Brisid, and Starrbolt, traveled to Triboar to celebrate Culindar's rescue. At the Inn, Tizer had the barkeep bring out the special keg of fey wine; the only drink fit for a decent Elven party. They all poured some of the golden drink into their glasses and raised them in a toast. "To Tel'Mithrim!" exclaimed Brisid. "To Tel'Mithrim!" cried the rest of the Elves at the table. After their victory toast, the group made merry for a few hours and then decided to head back to the guild hall. It had been a long day. This site is Copyright © 1998-2004 by Brisid Celemegil.
