The Rescue of Culindar: Prologue
by Starrbolt (22 Sep, 1996) The Rescue of Culindar: Prologue by Starrbolt

Shockingly wounded, Elenlanta Ranar (the elf called Starrbolt Wanderer in the Common language) staggered through the Neverwinter Woods. He collapsed face-down among the tall grass, and, in his delirious mind, a horrific vision unfolded: he saw Culindar, his friend and mentor in the Grey Company elf guild, trapped in a black netherworld and suffering terrible torment.

When at last Starrbolt opened his eyes, he was surprised to see a hearth warmed by a burning fire. Looking up, the elf found himself inside a wooden home. "Be still," said Bro Rivers, the Grey Company priest, kneeling beside Starrbolt. "Your wounds were severe, and they're not yet fully healed."

Eyes wide, Starr sat up and exclaimed, "Culindar...the Bow Singer! He's in danger!"

Brother Riversong grasped the ailing elf's shoulders, "What do you mean?"

Starrbolt explained that he and Culindar had been seeking adventure inside the Triboar arena when they encountered the drow matron Arielana and members of her house, Dur'Eben. Perhaps foolishly, Starr acted upon his prior friendship with Arielana and sought to engage the dark elves in friendly sparring. Culindar cautioned Starrbolt and only reluctantly followed the younger elf after Starr had impetuously leapt into battle.

"As Culindar warned me," said Starrbolt, "the drow had no intention of sparring! Arielana commanded her forces to take us prisoner, and they struck in earnest!" The ferocity of the dark elves' magical attacks surprised the surface elves. Incapacitated and near death, Starr escaped capture only due to the interference of marauding beasts which distracted his drow hunters. Culindar, however, was dragged off by the dark elves as their prisoner.

"We must rescue him!" Starrbolt urged.

"Aye," Brother Riversong replied, "I will inform the captain, Tizer and the swordmaster, Riklaun. They will organize a rescue party to find Culindar...or avenge him!"
