Chapter 7: Must
by Brisid Celemegil (03 Jan, 1997) Family Relations: Chapter 7: Must by Brisid Celemegil

Deallyona found herself flying through the air, her back and neck stinging in pain. In front of her she saw another elf, Brisid, flying in the same manner. The black fog enveloped her for a second, and then she was beneath it. She searched for her brother but quit when something very hard hit the back of her head, and Brisid crashed into her.

Brisid saw the red dragon appear just before Inthy blew flames engulfing Coraven. The resulting explosion blew Brisid back into Deallyona who in turn flew through the window. The bright afternoon sun shone on his head. Below him he saw the black fog, forming a box around the house. In front of the box, he saw a person, though he was to far to identify the stranger. Strangely, he began to wave to the person, though he knew not why. He fell into the black cloud which set his mind back on task.

"Why did not the glowlamp work? I cast it in the right window! 'The gray moon-elf will cast light from the small tower...'" Brisid stopped and suddenly knew what he had to do. He heard a grunt of pain behind him just before he landed on something warm and relatively soft.

Inthy laughed as he noticed the glowlamp in the third window. The stupid elves thought they had defeated him, Inthealos the Great Dracolich! The sight those mortals had had when he burst into the clock room, crushing their dreams... Oh, what a memorable moment! He wished he could have captured it in a painting or something.

His blast, however, had instantly incinerated the largest elf, Coraven. Too quick a death for one of this group. The other two's deaths had better make up for it, he thought. He glanced out of the window to see the elves plummeting away, but was instantly sorry. The bright sun outside hurt his eyes. Even through his eyelids the light still hurt! He kept his eyes closed as he jumped out of the tower onto the roof far below.

Groaning with pain, Brisid slowly stood up on the roof of the house. He hoped his cracked rib hadn't punctured his lung. He didn't know what a punctured lung felt like, but he had broken ribs before, and this fracture ached like no other had before.

Noticing he had landed on Deallyona, he tried to awaken her. He then saw her blood forming puddles on the roof beneath her. Glass shards from the window were probably embedded in her back, he thought. He managed to get the elf-maiden over his shoulders and stumbled under the weight. His broken rib didn't help, but Gods she was heavy! Too much muscle, he concluded.

He forcefully opened a nearby window with his foot and stepped, or rather, fell into the dark room beyond. Hoisting Deallyona on his back again, Brisid moved slowly through dimly lit hallways and down long flights of stairs and arrived at the room where he had met his father and sister. The glowlamp he had cast had long since expired. Knowing he could cast only one more glowlamp, if any, he groped through the darkness with his hands.

Inthealos landed on the roof with a crash. The structure beneath him groaned under his weight. Maybe it wasn't the greatest idea to spew fire all over the house, he reflected as the roof collapsed beneath him.

Alarms went off in the dracolich's head as Brisid tripped his magical sensors. The elf was back in the model room! "I may have underestimated these mortals," Inthy mumbled. If the elves dispelled the curse, he would be sucked back into his previous home, many demi-planes below the material plane. He sat in a pile of rubble, trying to comprehend a completely unfamiliar feeling. After a moment, he identified the emotion: fear.

He stood up and ran through the building, slowly reverting to his true form, enlarging existing portals and removing walls altogether.

Brisid heard crashing coming from the hallway. The dracolich was coming! Brisid set Deallyona underneath a table and ran to the model of the city which had miraculously survived the lightning blasts. "Maybe not so miraculously," he considered. Deallyona had said it was an exact replica of Alleria. Except it was smaller! "The small tower," Velisa had said-not the big, tall clock tower they had been in. He found the Hithwesta mansion and clock tower in the model city. Noting where the castle was, he prepared to cast the glowlamp.

The crashing became louder and faster, distracting him. His lungs burned, and breathing was becoming more and more difficult each second. He coughed into his sleeve and found it was stained with blood. He didn't have much time. He must hurry, he thought and began to laugh. Suddenly, he had no time left-the dracolich ripped the wall away behind him.

Inthealos saw the elf's lips moving in spell casting and whipped his claws down to crush the mortal. Too soon, a dim light appeared in the replica clock tower to shine on the castle. The room faded away from the dracolich's sight as he fell into his home demi-plane.
