wondering why hnis elf-luring ideas won't work

*the hobbit hid behind a tree, his freshly baked quiche about two metres in front, he had seen two elves earlier (well, I tihnk one was human)and was trying to find another, by luring it with a quiche. eventually though, the smell from the pastry was too much and the hobbit ran out, and ate it. then he lay down, patting his stomach and went ot sleep. the entire proccess, from putting down the quiche to falling asleep had taken about five minutes.*
