Kaori rubbed her eyes and listened to the soft sobbing of the woman sitting in the tree beneath her. Twinkling stars were shining down through the leaves and the waning moons softly illuminated the surrounding trees. Shifting onto her belly she peeked down at the young maid. Was she weeping for the leaves? Was she injured?
Frowning in concentration, Kaori observed the lady. The young dryad placed her arms around the trunk of the tree and slipped within it moving down to the branch below. The lady's crying had finally dwindled off with hiccupping sobs and she appeared to be sleeping. Creeping carefully along the stout branch, Kaori watched the young woman. The maid did not appear injured. Kaori rested her hand against the oak and asked it to not allow the sleeping lady to fall. Tears were drying on the young woman's cheek and her eyelids flickered as she softly murmured. Kaori slid back against the tree not sure if the woman was waking. When it appeared that she was not going to wake, Kaori crept back and stroked a tentative hand through the lady's soft hair and listened to a night warbler sing the sad song of it's lost nest as a breeze rustled the surrounding leaves.
Reaching out with her mind Kaori sent, Sleep sorrowful one, the Mother tree won't allow you to come to harm here…sleep. Give your sorrow to the old one. Pulling her knees up and resting her chin on them Kaori sat and kept watch before finally melding back within the oak for her own rest.
