So, a character history? This is going to be long. Very long.
**In character now**My name is Riviellan Iliell Laurefinwen. I was born many hundreds of years ago, yet still am I young. I was born of mixed heritage. My mother, Ainwen, was a High Sorceress of the elves. My father, Thindir; a Grand Wizard. My birth (and my twin sister's) was an accident of magic. For my mother was married to the Lord Telperion. Thindir was a wanderer, but a friend to the elves and a wizard. Not just any wizard mind you, but one of the Istari. A godling of true and mighty power. When he met my mother, things were different. And times were not as evil as they came to be in my day. This is how it happened. Thindir and Ainwen were walking with her attendants through the forest Inzil where she lived. He had come for a visit. They were so engaged in conversation that she failed to see a small hole on the ground. As she stepped into it, she twisted her ankle most painfully and fell to the ground. Thindir took her hand to help her up, but leapt away in surprise as a powerful bolt of energy shocked both of them. Her face held a look of alarm as well and neither of them knew what had happened. The lady was taken home and cared for. Thindir stayed unto she was healed, but left once more as he was always passing through. Months later, Ainwen discovered that she was with child, and she was absolutely certain it was not by Telperion. She searched her memory and found the only possible explanation. Thindir. She sent him a message, telling him he had sired and how. The next correspondence between them was to figure out what to do. They finally agreed that he would remain nameless. By now, Ainwen was showing and Telperion confronted her. Without doubt, he knew HE was not the father. She told him that she had never been unfaithful, and no one had defiled her. Telperion had been blessed with the gift of discernment. So he knew she was not lying. He asked if there was a father at all. Yes, but he will remain nameless. Because she had conceived outside of marraige, her staus and title could have been removed, but for one minor detail. Ainwen was the Sovereign Queen of Inzil, and as such, beyond reproach. Telperion had little power, as he aquired his title of King by marrying her. She allowed no discussion in the council as how to handle what had happened. At least not until I was born.
On the day of her labor, my sister was born first. The babe had thick, bright red curly hair and green eyes. her whole being had a tremendous and powerful magical aura. For this she was named Istarian. I came several hours later. I had fine, wispy, silver-white blonde hair and steel greyish-blue eyes. I had such a minor magical aura that they almost did not detect it. My child name was Iliell. My sister and I were raised very differently. She was educated in language, reading, and magic. Funny though, her aura diminished intensely to the point that she could barely light a candle with her hand. I was taught only to speak in common. They thought I was not intelligent enough to need anything else. I was the typical spoiled princess. Everyone did everything for me. I did no work whatsoever. But my aura and magical capabilities increased exponentially. I did not know how to use or control my power and it lay dormant. Mother and her husband knew, and they feared what I could become. They announced that I was to be taught no form of elvish, so I could not learn spells. I received no magical training at all. They feared my power, but did not teach me how to temper it.
This way their first mistake.
Eventually, the council convened. They came to the conclusion that because they couldn't punish my mother, they would punish her illegitimate children. My sister and I were given two choices. First: We could reveal our father's name. This would save both of us, but neither one would betray Thindir. OR (and here's the kicker) Second: We could marry.
Either way, a man "must claim us", as the saying went. The last option was more a result of not fulfilling either of the two aforementioned choices. Istarian and I had to do one or the other by our hundredth birthday (coming of age), or be banished. Banishment was the last choice. Fun, huh? Istarian found herself a sentinel called Romental and married him. He was MUCH older than her, but cared for her deeply. She wasn't even ninety when they were wed and she left her childhood behind. She called herself Tathana, and was declared a full citizen of Inzil. Romental let her study whatever she wanted, and soon she was a sentinel like him. But she also became a herald for my mother and one of the few women on the council. Romental and Telperion were also council members.
I was horrified that I had to choose to either betray my father or lose my innocence. I delayed my choice until it was too late. I challenged the ruling and a council was held. They heard my side, then voted. As they were tallied, I knew it wasn't good. With the exception of one vote, the council was unanimous. Who voted to let me stay and not be banished? Romental. Not my sister, but Romental. He thought more people would vote for me, especially my sister. He didn't know she had been jealous of my magic for the past eighty years. Ainwen could have vetoed the ruling, and I was counting on it. She entered, and with a tear on her face, said she would uphold their decision. I was stunned. If she had known what they were about to do to me, I'm sure she would have saved me. So they banished me.
This was their second mistake.
Later that evening, I was given a small pack with a dagger, a water skin, a blanket, some food, and flint. I was told that until a man claim me, I would not be permitted within the city limits, under pain of death. They escorted me away and I spent my first night huddled against a tree. As I cried, it rained. The harder I cried, the harder it rained. I realized I was causing the rain, but didn't care. I was alone for the first time in my life. For the next twenty years I barely survived. I had no knowledge to help me. Romental took pity on me and brought me supplies when he could slip away. It kept me going.
But at one hundred and twenty, and elf is still a child. Perhaps grown in body, but certainly not in mind. And I missed my mother. So I decided to sneak back in to see her. I went by night on the ground, thinking that I was well hidden. I was very wrong. A guard saw me. Now I admit, I was a terrible sight; too skinny, tattered clothes, dirty body, wild hair, and eyes dimmed by hunger and sadness. I guess I looked like an orc. The guard took aim and shot. But I saw it coming and tried to dodge. I wasn't fast enough and it caught my side. Falling to the ground I could see the figure in the trees turn to leave. But I recognized the face.
TATHANA ISTARIAN
My own sister had shot me. She tried to kill me! But why? Why? Did she truly hate me that much? I tried to reason as I attempted to get to the stream to quench my thirst and wash my wound. Romental found me at dawn. As he nursed me, I told him what happened. He did the only thing he could think of; he called a trusted family friend: Thindir. My father came with all speed. I think Romental knew that Thindir was my father. The sentinel drew out the arrow and brought me to the edge of the forest, but I was fading. Thindir agreed that if I stayed I would die, so he took me away. As I left my home, anger burned within me and I swore I would never return to this realm. The rage kindled more than my heart. Some if the trees were kindled too. Thindir put them out, but we continued in our journey to the neighboring elven forest city Calcirnore.
