Well, how does one become 'friended?'

An owner or a co-owner has to do it.

However...for reasons beyond their ability as programmers...the houses can only have something like 50 people on their "friend list", so unfortunately we can't friend everyone.

If you have serious trouble tackling spiders, trolls, ogres, or bandits, I strongly suggest you either hide/invis before you log out or go to a town instead.
