her twin scimitars, both mithril, swung through the air with a hiss. her target was a frail old elf, wearing a drab brown robe and bearing a gnarled staff of oak. he caught both blades on his staff, but they sank deep. quick as lightning, the elder twisted his staff, spinning the younger elf around in the air. she landed on her back with the old one's staff on her chest.

"you're doing better, dark one." the Druid removed his staff and helped her to her feet. "but one of your greatest trials is yet to come. today you will go to the sacred oak and find your name."

her green eyes still wild from the battle, she grinned. "it's about time, Master. i've been here three years and i'm still nameless." she sobered quickly and added quietly "i still need to find Goldyn."

the Druid looked at her, knowing her thoughts, but was silent. he led her to the sacred place, a cavern under the roots of an ancient oak and sat her down beside the pool of water within.

"you will stay here and defeat the spirit that comes. only then will you know what your names are, dark one." he handed her a simple obsidian knife. "use the knife to fight. i will no be here for you. goodbye and good luck." saying that, he gave her the sacred drink and left. she heard him cover the opening and walk away.

she looked down at the bowl in front of her and the knife in her hands. then, she picked up the knife and downed the contents of the bowl. it tastes like the earth, and trees, but had a strange spice as well. then, she was abruptly in another place.

she stood, waiting, but nothing happened. she walked for what seemed like ages around in the dark fog, but got nowhere. finally, her patience ran out and she challenged the dark.

"come out, spirit! or are you afraid of me? you should be, because you aren't a great spirit; you are just a good illusionist!"

almost immediately, there was a disturbance in the gloom. the dark one grinned fiercely, her eyes alight with battlelight. "now we're getting somewhere," she whispered as she gripped the knife in her hands.
