Actually it really depends upon what your looking for. Elves have been in mythology for years.
If you mean Tolkin style elves, Read up on his history. I remember reading some place that there was a group of his students that would play at being elves.

If you mean now, many older role players started playing Dungons and Dragons in the 70's at college. Damn hippies.
