Noble Elv'eng,

One question is where the Ultima Online elves on the lakesuperior shard came from and another is where the elves in the original Ultima games came from.

Remember the Ultima Online intro:
"Britannia that was once Sosaria now exists as a thousand worlds each with its own peoples, history and destiny. This Britannia is but one of many in the multiverse, that is Ultima Online."

Thus the story behind the elves of the Europa shard might even be different from the one behind the elves on the LS shard.

From the FAQ pertaining to the LS elves you may read the following:

Q. What is an Elf?
A. Loosely speaking, an elf is a pointy eared, long lived (or immortal, by some accounts), creature with a penchant for nature, music, and the arts. We are not Santa's elves, we aren't Keebler's elves. If you have seen Lord of the Rings, as most of you have, then you should be able to picture us with some degree of accuracy. In a more doctrinal sense, an Elf is a creature either created directly by Eru/Illuvater with the Song of Creation, and the first born of all the races of Middle Earth (Tolkien definition) or a race of beings created by Corellon Larethian. To most Elves in our particular guild, Eru, Illuvater and Corellon Larethian are the same being... which is a bit confusing, and doesn't make a lot of sense, but our guild is comprised of Elves of all types, so it's easier that way. Whether you call him Illuvater, Eru or Corellon Larethian, he is basically our creator, and we are his children.

Yet, if we forget about UO for a moment, where did the elves of the original Ultima games then come from? Where did the Sosarian elf come from?

The direct answer to that question was not given in the games, since neither of them was concerned with the creation of the world. Thus it is not known either how e.g. the humans of Sosaria were created.

Yet, important to understand is, that the elves of the original Ultima games were very different from what most UO elves understand as elvish. The following accurate description of the original Ultima elf is from the Ultima I manual:

"Shorter than their human counterparts by the span of three hands, the elves of Sosaria are slight of build and swift of movement. Their superior natural agility makes them excellent musicians and clever thieves. At home amongst the trees of the deepest forest or in the alleyways of the capital, the Sosarian Elf makes a stalwart companion and a relentless foe."

I myself have been fortunate enough to met all kinds of elves during my time in UO, but I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting a Sosarian elf and I doubt that I will. I am not sure the Sosarian elf is elvish enough, so to speak, to be of interest to the UO elf community

Sincerely,
Selwyn
