He did everything with single-minded devotion. His studies were an example of this. For even though the wee bird was sitting on his shoulder, and bumping his ear with a small roll of parchment, he was so engrossed in his work it took quite a few tries for the bird to gain his attention. At first the interruption was irksome, until he saw it for what it was. A note! Tossing his quill aside, he hurriedly took the roll from the small messenger. Once relieved of its burden, the bird contented itself with eating some breadcrumbs, perching grandly on a luncheon plate almost lost in the wild disarray of his desk. Not that he noticed, since he'd forgotten about eating hours before and was already reading the short note. Emotions were bare on his face, naked sadness mingled with elation as her words tugged at his heart. He missed her. It wasn't easy to forget how much, but work sometimes let him.
They'd been apart too long. But certain sacrifices had to be made, they'd agreed about that. She was to find them, and he was to complete the task given to them both. Her note made it clear her part of the bargain was finished and his...
He looked over the disarray of his office, or hovel as he thought of it. A mean little shack with nothing noteworthy about it other then it had four walls and something that could be mistaken for a roof if it wasn't raining. Short this must be, for your messenger is slight and would falter with longer. I miss you; you are the half that completes me as day completes night. Soon my studies shall conclude and we will again be together. Worry not and stay safely with others, as your welfare is everything to me.
Forever joined,
Melo
Carefully furling the note, he left it near the now sleeping bird confident his missive would be delivered when it awoke. That task completed and the hour nearing dusk, he took up his pack and headed out into the growing dark. He could hear them now, growling in anger as another intrepid adventurer dared disturb the place built for them. He was careful to avoid the bones of the fallen that littered the ground, and as danger loomed he thought of her a last time before setting himself to his task. Reagents at the ready and arms lifted, the words of power spilled from his lips as he turned to face the hell that was his quarry.
