the sunlight shone through the leaves of the ancient oak trees and lit up the golden hair of the King's daughter as she followed the path through the forest. her escort, three young elves who wished to win her heart, kept their hands on their swordhilts in a show of caution."what are we looking for, Princess?" Kerasth asked.
her laughter was like bells. "healing plants, silly!" she replied.
abruptly, a roar split the air around them. drawing their swords clumsily, the three elves stood in front of the princess.
a wild king tiger leapt out of the trees and landed in front of it's intended prey. the elf nobles screamed, dropped their swords and ran, leaving their golden princess frozen in fear. the tiger leapt for her throat, but was stopped by the dark figure who met in in midair from the bushes alongside.
screaming, the tiger swung, but the agile elf dodged and planted a vicious kick on the hilt of the knife sticking out from the tiger's chest, driven there by the initial impact. eyes dimming, the tiger staggered forward and landed at the feet of the stunned princess.
"a gift to you, your highness," the dusky elfgirl said sarcastically as she pulled her knife out. "keep the pelt and tell everyone that their Divine Child killed a king tiger with just a knife."
sheathing her knife, the elfgirl turned to leave.
"you- you're the one they call the Outcast, aren't you." it was a statement, said softly.
the elfgirl stopped dead, then snarled "yes, i'm the halfdrow bastard."
"i-i thank you for saving my life. what can i give you in return?"
turning, the elfgirl laughed. "would you give me a house, fancy clothes, jewellry, teaching, even a name of my own? i do not want it! i teach myself what i need, i prefer to live with nature, and i will make a name for myself. you can give me nothing i need!" she turned to leave again.
"i can give you friendship, acceptance."
turning slowly, the elfgirl asked: "you would do that for me?"
"i would. you do not deserve to be treated the way you are." she hesitated, then said firmly, "come to the apple tree in the Royal Gardens and i will give you a gift, in honor of our new friendship. please???"
hesitating, the elfgirl thought about it. then, she raised her head. green eyes looked into blue and she said firmly, "i will be there."
