She was glad to be finally going home. Gone from Tel'ruid and her little tower too long for her liking, she had tried to conclude her business earlier, but time conspired against her. A last opinion on her research into the remains the drow were leaving about, human to be sure, no sign of them being otherwise. But Ithilwen was a healer, not a forensicist, so she had searched out someone who might answer a few academic questions she had. Just for her own edification. Closing the door behind her, she knew something was amiss. Eru knew she'd spent enough time in the place that anything changed would immediately impress itself on her conscience. Methodically, because she never did anything in a hurry, Ithilwen began looking for what was different. On the second floor, the room she shared with him, she found her answer. Everything that was his was gone.
She sat on the corner of the bed they sometimes shared, staring at the open armoire. Not long ago, it was so full of his things, her clothing wouldn't fit in with his. Now, it was empty. She knew not to look for a note. Between the two of them there wasn't a need for words, there never was. For a long time she sat at the edge of the bed, the same thoughtful frown on her face as usually appeared when she worked on a problem.
How alike the two of them were. Both were running from a past that haunted them, neither willing to escape it entirely. His departure from her life was exactly like hers from Jarus' all those years ago. Without a word, without a note, just one day packing and leaving. The thoughtful frown melted into an accepting smile as she rose, silently closing the armoire doors. She would miss her companion, her lover, but she knew from the beginning that a fire that burned as hotly as theirs would one day die out.
