Personally, I think you are overreacting. If you want to invite people on a treasure hunt, with the understanding that the cartographer gets the gold, I'm sure you'd get quite a few takers. Most people go on treasure hunts for the occasional magical item and the novelty of dealing with the guards. There's easier ways to make 5000 gold.
